The Scout

Uniform

The Scout should purchase the official BSA shirt, plus the Daniel Webster Council (DWC) shoulder patch, patrol patch, and leadership patch (if applicable). Troop 1910 will provide the red shoulder epaulets (loops), neckerchief, neckerchief slide, Troop 1910 patch, BSA Handbook and awards (rank and merit badges). Although not required, the Scout may also want to purchase Scout pants (long or short), Scout belt, and Scout socks.

Dues

The total dues collected during the September to August Scout year is $50. There is an initial payment of $20 due by September 30, followed by $1 paid weekly.

The total dues collected for transfer Scouts (Webelos and Boy Scouts) is $25. There is an initial payment of $15 due, followed by $1 weekly dues.

Included in the cost of dues are the following: Subscription to Boys' Life; BSA registration; Insurance; Portions of the BSA uniform (as noted above); BSA Handbook; Awards; and Transfer Fees (if applicable).

A sibling discount is offered equal to the amount of the Boys' Life subscription (about $12).

Fundraisers

The annual registration fee and dues only support part of what it costs to fully fund a year of Scouting.  Additional operating funds are required for the cost of campouts, food, advancements, registration fees, insurance, supplies, camping equipment, special activities, etc.  Each Scout is expected to actively participate in fundraising efforts.  Troop 1910 usually does several fundraisers per year.  Fundraisers, along with dues, provide us with the revenue necessary to operate the Boy Scout program and to offer the Scouts a quality program. 

Please note that uniforms may be worn for BSA and Daniel Webster Council approved fundraisers (eg. popcorn), but may not be worn at other fundraising events. 

Subscriber Accounts

A portion of the funds earned during fundraising events may be made available to the Scout for Scouting activities. These funds will be put into a Scout account that is segregated from the normal troop funds.  Rules concerning the subscriber accounts are as follows:

  • Individual accounts may be used for summer camp, major trips, annual registration, dues or Scout uniform purchases, personal camping gear and other Scouting activities.
  • Any request to utilize funds must be addressed to the treasurer and are subject to the approval of the troop committee.
  • A Scout may inquire as to his balance at any time by asking the troop treasurer. 
  • If a Scout quits the troop and does not join a new BSA unit, the funds in his subscriber account go to the troop’s general fund.
  • If a Scout transfers to another troop within 3 months of quitting the troop, any money left in his account minus any fees owed will be sent to the new troop to be placed in a similar account on behalf of the Scout. 

Scout Handbooks

Each Scout will receive a BSA handbook upon joining the troop.  The handbook is an integral part of the Scouting experience. Without the handbook the Scout does not have a means of tracking or referencing his advancements. This includes any rank advancement, most merit badge work and a quick reference for many other Scouting and outings items.  Each Scout is expected to bring his handbook with him to every Scout meeting and every campout. This will enable the leaders to accurately track each of the Scouts accomplishments.

Equipment

It is not necessary that new Scouts immediately run out to the local high-priced outfitter store and purchase everything in sight.  The two most important items a Scout should own is a sleeping bag and mess kit.  Otherwise, there are alternatives to owning, such as borrowing, renting and sharing (eg. sharing a tent with another Scout).  Before each camping trip a packing list which identifies items needed for the trip will be available on the troop web site.  A personal packing list is also found in the BSA handbook for your reference. 

Attendance

Active participation and regular attendance is expected at all troop, patrol, patrol leader’s council, and other Scouting meetings and activities. Scouts should notify their patrol leader, senior patrol leader, or Scoutmaster if they are unable to attend a meeting or event.  The Scout should also telephone his patrol leader for any missed information when he is unable to attend an activity.  Exceptions are made for good reasons, such as school activities, family and religious obligations, etc.
